(From Hayes Wauford)
North Carolina Shooters had outstanding performances at the recent 2011 NSSA World Skeet Championships held in San Antonio, Texas. The National Shooting Complex threw great targets in spite of high temperatures and winds, and the Tar Heel contingent took full advantage, standing out among the group of 700 shooters from around the globe. All told, NC shooters brought home 4 World Championships (out of 8 events), 2 Silvers, and 1 Bronze medal.
Dustan Taylor won the High Overall Championship shooting a perfect 450x450. Dustan is possibly the youngest shooter to shoot a perfect score to win the HOA. This was his second World Championship in as many years.
Hayes Wauford won the 12 Gauge World Championship. He and Dustan also finished 1st and 2nd in the 12 Gauge East event, putting on an impressive 6 box shootoff on the stadium field (following 2 preliminary boxes). Hayes finished Runner-Up in the 28 Gauge event, and Runner-Up in the HOA to Dustan breaking a 449x450.
The High All Around event was decided between 4 shooters with scores of 548x550. This group included Dustan and Hayes. Hayes ended up HAA World Champion, with Dustan finishing 3rd.
Jack Ross won the Champ of Champs World Championship for his first World Title. He bested the group of other 100s in a .410 shootoff under windy conditions and made many impressive shots.
Notably, Mike Schott pounded 150 out of 150 in the 12 Gauge Main and won C Class in the Main, East & West.
Congratulations to Dustan, Jack, Hayes and all of the other shooters from North Carolina that showed the World what a tough state it is to shoot and win in!
