2010 Zone 4 Recap Letter

August 24, 2010

Fellow Shooters,

Thank you for attending the 37th Annual Zone 4 Championships. We hope you had a great time in Savannah. Many shooters told me how glad they were to be returning to Savannah and the Forest City Gun Club. Thanks to the efforts of Chris Cantrell and the staff, the facilities at the club were in the best condition I have ever seen them and I have been going there for over thirty years. The club staff and members were committed to showing you a good time and welcoming you as their special guests. We had a great dinner Saturday night, compliments of the FCGC. 330 low country boil meals with 175 pounds of shrimp were served. Many of the people working to serve the dinner were officers of the club. They were demonstrating their commitment to hosting major shoots now and in the future.

239 12 gauge shooters took to the fields on Saturday morning. That is more shooters than we have seen in several years. While most things were very good, we recognize there is always room for improvement. We made a list of areas that we will strive to improve for next year’s shoot. We hope you will plan to attend. Please note that the final decision on the location of the 2011 Zone shoot will be made at the Winter Meeting of the Zone 4 Directors in late January and we will be sure to inform everyone so you can put our shoot on your shoot calendar for 2011.

We had a great showing of SCTP and Junior shooters. From all accounts, they and their families had a great time and the kids posted some of the best scores at the shoot. The drawing for the Remington Nitro Duck gun was a real hit with the SCTP shooters. Thanks to Louise Terry for donating the gun. I urge everyone to support youth shooting at your club and ask you to encourage the youth shooters at your club to plan to attend the Zone with us next year.

The lightning on Sunday afternoon put a damper on what was turning out to be the best Zone 4 shoot in several years. It created problems for both shooters and the Zone shoot staff. Because we had to cancel the .410 event, we did a preliminary financial review and have determined we will refund full entry fees and optional money to all of the shooters who were not able to shoot their .410. We also prorated a return to the first flight of .410 shooters based upon the number of targets they shot, plus any optional monies they played. We are sorry for the disruption, but lightning is not anything we want to gamble a life on.

For those of you who shot a partial 100 targets on the 1:30PM flight Sunday, those targets ARE registered and you need to log those targets on your Class Card. As an example, if you shot 66 targets and you broke 55, then under SHT on your card, you would put 66 and under BRK you would put 55.

We are considering a change in the format for next year that would give us some relief if there is a delay. We need your thoughts on shooting Doubles and one gun on Friday, two guns on Saturday, and one gun on Sunday. This would allow some cushion in our schedule, and permit us a better chance to finish the shoot if there is an unavoidable delay. If we are lucky enough to have no delays, we will be finished with shootoffs and awards sooner on Sunday and be able to get everyone on the road back home at an earlier hour.

Please let your National Directors know what you think about the idea as we will decide on this also at the Zone Directors Winter Meeting.

Thanks again for supporting your Zone 4 Association.

Very truly yours,

Kenneth Keth
Zone 4 President
